Job Description
Boathouse Attendant at Griffy Lake Nature Preserve
Duties
Employee is a frontline representative of Bloomington Parks and Recreations and the Griffy Lake Boathouse. Employee interacts with the public on a daily basis to rent watercraft, collect signed waivers, handle City funds, and answer general questions about the park. Employee maintains accurate records for annual launch passes, financial deposits, and other required information. Employee is directly responsible for the safety of park visitors, park maintenance, and general appearance of Griffy Lake Nature Preserve. Additional duties include but are not limited to:
- Facilitating boat rental operation at Griffy Lake Nature Preserve.
- Monitoring lake and trails and informing park visitors of park regulations and policies.
- Ensuring safety of park visitors.
- Maintaining accurate records of deposits, rentals, patron participation and daily events.
- Performing basic maintenance on equipment, buildings, parking lot, and trails.
- Maintaining informational materials.
- Attending regularly scheduled staff meetings.
- Assisting with public programs such as Sunset Paddles, Full Moon Paddles, and standup paddleboard programs.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Skills and Knowledge
Previous boating experience and customer service skills. Good working knowledge of boat and waterfront safety including First Aid and CPR certification.
- Must be self-motivated, and have the ability to work well with the public and other employees.
- Must be reliable and punctual.
- Must be capable of performing physically demanding work including crouching, bending, reaching high above your head, and lifting more than 50 pounds.
- Knowledge of local forest and lake ecosystems.
- Must have the ability to follow oral and written direction.
Physical Effort
Must be in good physical condition. Moderate physical effort is exerted by the employee in the daily tasks of boathouse operations and while performing natural area maintenance. Employee must be physically capable of lifting weights in excess of 50 pounds.
Working Conditions
Employee performs duties in and out of doors, in varying weather conditions. Indoor spaces are not climate controlled. Employee is periodically exposed to high temperatures, high humidity levels, and strong winds. Worksite is near a large body of water and a mature forest. Safety precautions must be used at all times to avoid injury.
Hours
Looking for weekday availability. Shifts are 4-6 hours per day with a 15-35 hour work week, except during periods of inclement weather. Weekends and holidays are required.
Season:
- April: Weekends only, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
- May-August: Daily, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
- September: Daily, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
- October: Weekends only, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
Additional evenings and late nights for sunset paddle and full moon paddle programs.
Orientation takes place Saturday, March 28, 2026.
Salary
$16.76 per hour
